1793-1815 Navy Uniform Requirements

The seaman didn't have a uniform, exactly; rather, there was a tradition of proper seamanly clothing, and ships would purchase slops from shoreside merchants. Skilled sailors would tailor these slops or make or purchase their own. Therefore, over time, the seamen in a particular ship would acquire a certain amount of uniformity of dress. It was tradition for the Captain's barge crew to be the best and most uniformly dressed salts of the ship, and all experienced seaman would have a good shore-going rig.

This guide describes adaptations to the c.1800 naval rig for the variations portrayed.

All officer impression must be approved by the membership, and all members portraying officers are responsible for also having a seaman impression ready to revert to if low event numbers make this necessary.
